Why do people insist "The Platypus continues to baffle and confuse ...?

Monotremes, which platypus, and echidnas belong were once more common as fossil evidence has shown. The unique geographical nature that is Australia has saved these species from extinction. They are not really a mystery rather a unique look back to a time in the evolutionary timeline, where a variety of species existed. Weirder than that which we are use to today, but non the less able to adapt to their environment as best suited to that era.
